Deep Plane Facelift

New York, NY

Introduction

Facelift

Facelift surgery is a highly sought-after cosmetic surgical procedure that repositions skin, muscles, and fat in the face and neck to restore one’s natural beauty and highlight bone structure. With age, rapid changes in weight, and life’s stresses, our skin can begin to sag, giving a weathered look to the face that can be perceived as tired or older than we are. Patients often begin to consider a facelift when their outer appearance no longer matches the vibrancy they feel inside. In our upscale office on the Upper East Side of New York City, Dr. Andrew Timberlake helps patients from across the world reverse the signs of aging.

Dr. Timberlake is an award-winning surgeon with extensive education and training from Yale University and New York University. He is a top facial rejuvenation surgeon in New York. His deep plane facelift is designed to turn back the clock while leaving you looking exactly like yourself with minimal downtime.

About deep plane facelift

The Deep Plane Facelift Expertise of Dr. Timberlake

Dr. Timberlake can improve the appearance of your face with an extended deep plane facelift, his preferred method for completely natural yet dramatic results.

During Dr. Timberlake’s training, he apprenticed under Dr. David Rosenberg, a pioneer of the deep plane facelift. Their approach to this facelift entails a complete resuspension of the platysma muscle, the sheet-like muscle in the face and neck that descends as we age, causing the formation of jowls and a loose appearance to the lower face and neck. Dr. Timberlake has mastered this operation and is able to achieve completely natural-appearing results with essentially no stigmata of having had surgery. A delicate surgical technique and the best post-surgical care ensure the fastest possible recovery times. Facelifts are an increasingly popular approach to facial rejuvenation for those who want to appear like a more refreshed version of themselves, avoiding procedures that change the way you look. Dr. Timberlake and Dr. Rosenberg recently published their deep plane facelift technique in the leading plastic surgery journal in the world, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery- you can read their article here.

Our patients tend to be exceptionally private. During your consultation in our Manhattan office, Dr. Timberlake will share many before-and-after examples of his deep-plane facelift results.

Other Facelift Procedures

Midface Lift

Many patients are noticing early signs of jowl formation in their forties that they would like corrected. A midface lift is a facelift procedure that addresses the cheeks, jowls, and jawline when a patient’s neck does not yet need surgery. This is an excellent option for patients who want to restore their youthful cheeks and jawline without filler or other injections. There are no incisions behind the ears or into the posterior hairline.

Deep Neck Lift

The deep neck lift is an excellent procedure for young patients with excessive fullness in the neck and underneath the chin who do not have other signs of facial aging. This surgery involves an incision underneath the chin without incisions around the ears.

Male Facelift

As we live longer, vibrancy is extending, and more men are seeking to look as good as they feel. A well-executed facelift is the most natural way to address the face and neck laxity that inevitably comes with age. Dr. Timberlake is an expert in achieving natural results for men seeking a more youthful appearance that matches their energy level. Performing facelifts and other facial cosmetic procedures on men requires careful planning and postoperative care to avoid feminizing the face at all and to ensure that scar placement is inconspicuous and custom-tailored to minimize distortion of the beard. Dr. Timberlake is an expert in male facelifts and male neck lifts and will demonstrate how his procedure will improve your face and jawline during your consultation.

First steps

Your Consultation

procedure-first-step

The first step in determining if you are a good candidate for surgery is a consultation with Dr. Timberlake at our office in New York City. Patients thinking about having surgery in the upcoming six months and who may have yet to make plans to travel to New York City soon may request a video consultation. On the day of your appointment, Dr. Timberlake will evaluate your unique needs, cosmetic goals, facial structure, and features. He will physically examine your skin quality, wrinkles, soft tissue, sagging jowls, and neck muscles. He will ask you about your life, work, and aesthetics. This information will inform whether you are a good candidate for surgery.

If he decides that it is indeed a good choice for you, he will discuss the various techniques and his surgical plan with you, outline what your postoperative plan and recovery would look like, and show you several representative examples of patients around your age who have undergone similar procedures.

Once you and Dr. Timberlake are satisfied with the direction of your procedure, he will present your customized surgical plan. Our Patient Coordinator will then review logistics with you, help schedule your surgical date, and provide detailed instructions on preparing for it. You will always meet with Dr. Timberlake again before surgery to discuss any lingering questions and review every detail of your surgical plan.

What to expect

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your facelift surgery, you will first meet with Dr. Timberlake in our Manhattan surgery center to review everything one final time and answer any questions that you may have. Your surgery will take place in our operating rooms within the same surgery center you visited for your consultation. You will then be made comfortable in the operating room, where an anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia to make your experience completely comfortable and painless.

Once you are under anesthesia, Dr. Timberlake will make an incision that blends along your hairline, starting from the temples and going behind the ear. Our office has operated on some of the most visible figures in the world, and we take exceptional care in our incision planning in order to optimize your recovery and leave you with essentially no stigmata of having undergone cosmetic surgery. He then gently lifts the skin and performs an extensive dissection underneath the facial and neck muscles (extended deep plane facelift) to restore the facial musculature and the fat in your cheeks to a more youthful position. Finally, Dr. Timberlake will close the incisions with fine sutures to encourage perfect healing.

After your surgery, a compression dressing will be gently applied to protect the incisions and prevent swelling from collecting. Depending on the complexity of the surgery and the number of additional procedures performed at the same time, the process can take four to six hours.

Post Surgery

Facelift Recovery

Given the procedure’s complexity, every facelift and recovery will also look different. After surgery, you will be monitored in the recovery room until your anesthesia wears off. When you awake from anesthesia, a nurse assigned specifically to you will be at your bedside. This same nurse will care for you in the recovery room and will escort you later that day to either your home or a local hotel, where they will care for you during the early postoperative period. If you are staying at a hotel, your room will be prepared for your arrival, with all your nurse’s supplies set up before arrival. Our facility has discrete entrance and exit routes, allowing for complete privacy during this period. We do not place any drains, as our careful attention to detail during surgery minimizes swelling. Our patients who have had drains placed in past procedures note that they have been remarkably more comfortable during their recovery without drains. The nurse taking care of you is one of a handful of carefully selected nurses chosen by our office who have decades of experience in taking care of facelift patients after surgery. Our office will organize this nurse and any hotel accommodations.

During facelift recovery, you can expect minor swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the first few days after the procedure. Dr. Timberlake will provide a prescription for pain-reducing medication and detailed instructions on caring for the treated area. This includes keeping your head elevated as you sleep to reduce swelling and prevent any disturbance of the sutures. The nurse taking care of you will administer these medications for you, ice your face to minimize swelling, bruising, and discomfort, and ensure you can fully relax during the early postoperative period. Dr. Timberlake will visit you in your hotel postoperatively so that you do not have to make trips to and from our office during this time of rest.

We recommend you take at least a week off from work, avoid strenuous activity, and exercise for a few weeks to let your body heal gracefully. Depending on which procedures you are having performed, Dr. Timberlake will tell you exactly how long you should expect to take off before returning to work and social engagements. Patients are usually surprised by how quickly they are able to return to all normal social activities when undergoing surgery with Dr. Timberlake and following our postoperative care regimen.
